Lead in Drinking Water: Sources, Testing, Risks and Filters

Lead in drinking water is a serious exposure concern, especially for children and during pregnancy. It is also easy to misunderstand because lead usually has no reliable taste, smell, or color, and it often enters water after the water leaves the treatment plant.

The EPA explains that lead commonly reaches tap water through corrosion of plumbing materials. This means a utility report is important, but it may not describe what happens inside a particular service line, building, or faucet.

Where Does Lead in Water Come From?

• Lead service lines connecting a building to the water main
• Lead-containing solder in older plumbing
• Brass or other fixtures that can release lead
• Stagnation after water sits in contact with plumbing
• Water chemistry that increases corrosion

Lead does not need to come from visibly rusty water. Clear water can contain lead, and one faucet can test differently from another.

Who Is Most Vulnerable?

Children are particularly vulnerable because lead can affect the developing brain and nervous system. EPA and CDC state that there is no known safe level of lead in a child's blood. Adults can also be harmed, and reducing avoidable exposure is important.

Symptoms are not a reliable screening method. People can be exposed without obvious signs. Water testing and, where appropriate, medical testing are the proper tools.

How to Test for Lead in Drinking Water

1. Use a laboratory approved or recognized by the relevant state or local authority.
2. Follow the laboratory's exact instructions for bottle, stagnation period, and sample volume.
3. Identify whether the sample is first-draw, sequential, or flushed.
4. Sample the cold-water tap normally used for drinking and cooking.
5. Record the faucet, date, time, recent plumbing work, and treatment in use.

A first-draw sample can show the effect of water sitting in plumbing. A flushed sample can help investigate whether the source is farther upstream. A single sample may not map the entire building.

Immediate Steps That Can Reduce Exposure

• Use cold water for drinking, cooking, and infant formula.
• Flush stagnant water according to current local guidance.
• Clean faucet aerators, where particles can collect.
• Use an appropriate certified filter and replace it on schedule.
• Use an alternative water source when directed by authorities.
• Identify and replace lead service lines or problematic plumbing where feasible.

Boiling does not remove lead. It can concentrate dissolved material as water evaporates.

Choosing a Filter for Lead

Look for a current, model-specific lead-reduction claim that applies to the exact cartridge, flow, and rated capacity. Certification language must be read carefully. A system can meet a material-safety standard without having a lead-reduction claim.

Point-of-use treatment at the kitchen tap is often appropriate when the priority is drinking and cooking water. A whole-house system may be considered when the source and distribution pattern justify it, but it does not automatically solve lead released by a downstream faucet or pipe.

What TipaTech Can and Cannot Claim

A water filtration system from TipaTech should only be promoted for lead reduction when the current model and configuration have supporting documentation for that claim. General statements about fine filtration, scale, materials, or chlorine are not substitutes for verified lead performance.

TipaTech can help review the water test, plumbing context, flow, and treatment location. Where lead plumbing is the source, filtration should be treated as exposure reduction, not as a reason to delay permanent source correction.

The Bottom Line

Lead can enter water through service lines, solder, and fixtures even when water looks normal. Test the correct tap, follow official guidance, choose a filter with a specific lead claim, maintain it, and address the plumbing source whenever possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does lead in drinking water come from?

Lead often enters water through corrosion of lead service lines, solder, fixtures, and premise plumbing. The utility source water can meet standards while lead is introduced closer to the tap.

Can boiling remove lead from water?

No. Boiling does not remove lead and can concentrate dissolved substances as water evaporates. Follow official guidance and use an appropriate certified treatment or alternative water source.

How can I test for lead in tap water?

Use a certified laboratory and follow its sampling instructions. First-draw and flushed samples answer different questions, so record stagnation time and the exact faucet used.

What type of water filter removes lead?

Choose a filter with a current, model-specific lead-reduction claim for the intended flow and capacity. Replace cartridges on schedule because an expired filter cannot be assumed to maintain performance.

Is a whole-house filter always necessary for lead?

No. When lead is introduced by indoor plumbing or one fixture, a certified point-of-use filter at the drinking tap may be more targeted. Lead service lines and plumbing sources should still be corrected where possible.
