Gases in Well Water: Methane, Radon and Hydrogen Sulfide

Some private wells contain dissolved gases that can affect safety, odor, plumbing, or indoor air. Methane, radon, and hydrogen sulfide behave differently, so a single "gas filter" is not a reliable answer. The first step is to identify the gas, measure it correctly, and understand where it is entering the water system.

Chloramine is often discussed alongside these concerns, but it is not a naturally occurring gas. It is a dissolved disinfectant used by some public water systems. Separating these issues prevents homeowners from choosing treatment based only on smell, bubbles, or a broad marketing claim.

What Gases Can Occur in Well Water?

Methane in Well Water

Methane can enter groundwater through natural geologic processes or human activity. Water may look clear while releasing bubbles or causing sputtering at a faucet. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, ingestion is not the main concern. The important risk is that methane can escape into enclosed air, where it may become flammable, explosive, or displace oxygen.

Do not try to confirm methane with a flame. If you suspect it, ventilate the area, avoid ignition sources, and arrange proper testing. Treatment commonly focuses on releasing the gas in controlled equipment and venting it safely outdoors.

Is Chloramine a Gas?

No. Chloramine is a water disinfectant, usually formed when ammonia is added to chlorine. The EPA explains that chloramines provide longer-lasting secondary disinfection as water travels through a distribution system. Water that meets applicable standards can be used for ordinary household purposes.

Chloramine can still matter when selecting a filter because not every carbon product has the same capacity for chloramine reduction. Check the exact model's verified claim, flow rate, media volume, and replacement schedule. A chlorine claim should not automatically be treated as a chloramine claim.

Radon in Water

Radon is a radioactive gas produced by the natural breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It is primarily an indoor-air issue, but private well water can contribute radon to indoor air when water is sprayed, heated, or agitated. The relative contribution varies by geology, water concentration, ventilation, and household use.

A routine mineral or bacteria test does not establish the radon level. Use a laboratory that provides instructions for a radon-in-water sample, and also follow current EPA guidance for testing indoor air. A point-of-entry treatment may be considered when water is a meaningful source, because treating one drinking tap does not address gas released from showers and other fixtures.

Hydrogen Sulfide and the Rotten-Egg Odor

Hydrogen sulfide is commonly associated with a rotten-egg smell. It may occur naturally in groundwater, be produced by sulfur bacteria, or develop in a water heater. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends identifying the source because treatment differs when the odor appears only in hot water, at one fixture, or throughout the property.

At higher airborne concentrations, hydrogen sulfide can create an indoor-air hazard. Strong or sudden odors, especially in a confined well house or treatment room, should not be handled as a simple taste-and-odor complaint. Ventilate and obtain professional help.

Why Bubbles, Odor, and TDS Are Not Enough

• Bubbles can result from methane, air drawn into plumbing, pressure changes, or other gases.
• A rotten-egg smell can come from hydrogen sulfide, sulfur bacteria, or a water-heater reaction.
• Radon has no reliable taste, color, or odor.
• A TDS meter does not identify dissolved gases.
• A general potability panel may not include methane, radon, or hydrogen sulfide.

Testing Gases in Water Correctly

1. Describe where the issue occurs, including hot versus cold water and one fixture versus the whole building.
2. Use the sampling container and procedure supplied by the laboratory.
3. Avoid aerating or shaking a sample unless the instructions specifically require it.
4. Record well depth, recent drilling or construction, water pressure, and treatment already installed.
5. Review indoor ventilation and any enclosed spaces where gas could accumulate.

Treatment Options Depend on the Gas

Aeration and Outdoor Venting

Aeration can transfer volatile gases from water to air, but that air must be discharged safely. Equipment should be sized for peak flow, contact time, off-gas handling, pressure, and freeze protection. Releasing a hazardous gas into a basement or utility room is not treatment.

Oxidation and Filtration

Hydrogen sulfide may be treated through oxidation followed by appropriate filtration, depending on its concentration and the water chemistry. The process can create particles that require removal and may need pH control or ongoing chemical service.

Activated Carbon

Carbon can be useful for selected taste, odor, and chemical concerns. It should not be described as a universal solution for methane, radon, hydrogen sulfide, and chloramine. The exact media, bed depth, flow, contaminant level, and verified performance claim matter.

Where TipaTech Fits

TipaTech can help evaluate how a whole-house filtration or conditioning stage fits into a broader water-treatment plan. A TipaTech water filtration system should not be presented as removing a dissolved gas unless the current model and configuration have documented performance for that gas.

Where methane, radon, or significant hydrogen sulfide is confirmed, the project may require a dedicated release, oxidation, ventilation, or other treatment stage before or alongside conventional filtration. The design should be based on laboratory results and site conditions.

The Bottom Line

Methane, radon, and hydrogen sulfide are not interchangeable, and chloramine is not a naturally occurring gas. Correct sampling and source diagnosis come before equipment selection. Treatment must protect both the water and the indoor environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can methane in well water make you sick?

Methane in water is not generally treated as an ingestion hazard, but it can escape into indoor air and create a fire, explosion, or oxygen-displacement risk. Suspected methane requires testing, ventilation, and professional treatment design.

Does a carbon filter remove methane or radon from water?

A standard carbon or sediment filter should not be assumed to remove dissolved methane or radon. Aeration and safe outdoor venting are commonly considered, but the final design must match the gas level, flow, building, and local requirements.

Why does well water smell like rotten eggs?

A rotten-egg odor often points to hydrogen sulfide or sulfur bacteria, but it can also originate in a water heater. Test the source and compare hot and cold water before choosing treatment.

Is chloramine a gas in drinking water?

No. Chloramine is a dissolved disinfectant used by some utilities. It is commonly formed by adding ammonia to chlorine and should be evaluated as a disinfectant residual, not as a naturally occurring gas.

How do I test for gases in well water?

Use a qualified laboratory or water professional familiar with volatile compounds. Sampling method matters because gases can escape from the sample before analysis. Follow the laboratory instructions exactly.
